This is a post about a competition happening this summer in which I am fortunate enough to be participating.
The Bucharest international jazz competition is one of the largest and most-renowned jazz competitions in Europe with acts from all over the world meeting in Bucharest, Romania.

A subject I did want to talk a bit about was the logistic of travelling abroad with instruments, an issue which has been raised by this amazing opportunity. For me as a musician, the concept of my prized instrument in any kind of cargo area really does not make me feel good. I did some research into the issue, and found that there was not a fixed rule on the matter and that circumstances differed from country to country and from airline to airline. Luckily, with KLM I can buy a seat for the guitar for the taxi price (minus tax) which is still a lot to Bucharest but not too bad seeing as I get to sit right next to my pride and joy all the way there! So I was a bit lucky, but it got me thinking. I read lots of horror stories about smashed-up instruments etc. Why has this issue not been addressed properly by airlines? I read recently that the MU was battling for legislation to formalise a system for travelling abroad with instruments. That is great news. But come on airlines, stop dragging your feet! Musicians have needed to travel abroad since…forever! Maybe if the 1st class lounge wasn’t so vast we could fit our humble instruments in somewhere…
